My Body My Rights: IVAW -

International Violence Against Women Act

The International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) makes ending violence against women and girls a top U.S. diplomatic priority. In August 2012, the U.S. government released its first ever U.S. Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence Globally. The Strategy is largely derived from and has long been a core component of the I- VAWA and requires federal agencies engaged in foreign assistance work to undertake measurable steps in their programming to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and to be coordinated in these efforts.

In 2013, the I-VAWA will ensure that the U.S. government implements the Strategy to reduce violence against women and girls in at least 5 countries where it is severe. The bill supports measures to prevent violence, protect survivors and bring perpetrators to justice. It contains best practice provisions for preventing and responding to violence against women during times of peace and times of conflict. The legislation was developed by Amnesty International USA, Futures Without Violence, and Women Thrive Worldwide with input from more than 40 international and 150 U.S. based groups with relevant expertise.

More info can by found by clicking here.

Come to the conference to learn more and take action to help pass this bill!

Fighting Abuses at the Texas-Mexico Border

American Civil Liberties Union

Terri Burke, the executive director of ACLU Texas

will talk about protecting human rights of

immigrants in the border region. They

will describe the unacceptable human

tragedy that takes place daily in this

region. The ACLU of Texas is dedicated to

reclaiming constitutional and civil rights

for all Texans, regardless of immigration

status. In the Rio Grande Valley residents

face increasingly militarized local and federal law-enforcement agencies that unfairly target immigrants or those perceived to be immigrants.

More info can be found clicking here.

Free Tibetan Filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen.

Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen is serving a six-year prison sentence in China for "inciting separatism" -- simply because he dared to speak out about Tibetan human rights through his filmmaking. Come to the conference to help demand

his release!

Dhondup is not due to be released until December 2014. He has been tortured, subjected to solitary confinement, and at times forced to work up to 18 hours a day. He suffers from various medical issues, including Hepatitis B, for which he is not receiving treatment.

We are calling on the President of the People’s Republic of China to release Dhondup Wangchen immediately and unconditionally. We also call on him to ensure that Dhondup Wangchen receives the medical attention he needs.
